Golden Milk

January 28, 2020

Golden Milk

Golden milk (aka turmeric milk) is at the top of the list when it comes to healthy beverages.
A mix of turmeric and dairy-free milk along with cinnamon, maple syrup, and a pinch of black pepper. Naturally sweetened, incredibly healthy, and so very delicious. Ready in just 5 minutes.
In addition to soothing me to sleep, golden milk has also helped me appease my nightly sweet cravings before.
Lately, I’ve been replacing my evening sweet treat (usually a piece of dark chocolate with sea salt) with a steaming cup of Golden Milk and find myself feeling completely satisfied.

Turmeric and Ginger Iced Tea

Turmeric and Ginger Iced Tea

At this point we all know how good for you turmeric is — if you don’t just Google it, you'll be flooded with tons of information on this super spice.
We have also learned how to include turmeric in our recipes: rice, chicken, mashed sweet potatoes, soups, etc. Not to mention that turmeric latte (aka golden milk) has become one of our favorite drinks.
So it was only a matter of time before we would use turmeric in the quintessential summertime drink: iced tea.
Iced tea is cold, refreshing, and looks so pretty in a tall glass with lots of ice. With turmeric it becomes also super healthy.

Mom's Pink Lemonade

Mom's Pink Lemonade

When I was a kid I was 100% convinced that pink lemonade was made from pink lemons (yes, pink lemons do exist but unfortunately their light pink flesh juices run clear).
Then for years I thought it was made by adding pink grapefruit juice to lemonade; it’s not.
Pink lemonade is a popular cloudy variation of traditional lemonade made with added grape juice or cranberry juice, giving the drink its distinctive pink color.
If the taste of pink and traditional are exactly the same, why does the former is more popular than the latter?

Blackberry Mint Iced Green Tea

Blackberry Mint Iced Green Tea

At this point you are well aware that I love making my own iced teas and adding different combinations of fruit and fresh herbs.
So far I’ve made Rosemary-Peach, Raspberry Mint, Ginger Mint, and even a Lemon Sparkling Iced Tea.
And today I present you with some awesome, super refreshing Blackberry Mint Iced Green Tea.
Because the heat wave we’re currently experiencing in my neck of the woods is a double-whammy (with high heat and high humidity) and one of the most effective ways to cool off is to sit in the cool shade and drink a tall glass of iced tea.
Or at least that’s what I like to do!

Green Tea Lemonade

Green Tea Lemonade

For reasons I can’t fully understand, if you show up at a 4th of July barbecue with pitchers of freshly-squeezed lemonade, you’ll be greeted and revered; but if you show up with the same pitchers of freshly-made green tea lemonade, people will actually flip out.
Why is green tea lemonade far more exciting than regular lemonade? It is a mystery to me as well.
But that’s what happened the day before yesterday at a friend’s Fourth of July party.
Along with other food items I was asked to bring lemonade.
I thought about bringing Cherry Lemonade, Peach Mint Lemonade, Blueberry Lemonade or just regular yellow pale lemonade. But then I thought about this Green Tea Lemonade — I make all the time — and how delicious and simple to make it is.
I gave it a shot.
And you know what?
People raved about it and many asked for the recipe.
So here it is.

Cherry Lemonade

Cherry Lemonade

It’s no secret that I share quite a few summer drink recipes around these parts, but every good host knows he needs several top notch refreshing lemonade recipes in his stash — a Blueberry Lemonade and a Peach Mint Lemonade are definitely not enough.
This family friendly Cherry Lemonade is one of my fave for the hot summer days and nights.
I love to keep a pitcher made up to enjoy. If family and friends are coming over, I pour it in tall glasses with a couple of lemon slices and lots of ice: Max results, minimum effort!

Peach Mint Lemonade

Peach Mint Lemonade

I know what you’re thinking “That’s pink lemonade! You’re trying to sell us homemade peach mint lemonade but that, right there in the pictures, is Crystal Light Pink Lemonade!
I can’t blame you. I, just for fun, compared the two and there was no significant difference in color.
Believe me though, what you see in the pictures is pretty pretty pink homemade Peach Mint Lemonade.
So pink it looks like the river in candy kingdom, like it was made by a unicorn or by a princess. You decide.

Mint and Ginger Iced Green Tea

I know, I know, “Mike, what’s up with putting up a iced tea recipe two days after an awesome long holiday weekend?
But wait, I think you’re coming at this from the wrong angle; this Mint & Ginger Iced Green Tea is, in fact, three days early for next weekend and just in time for the summer heat.
Because we all know that a tall glass of iced tea, dripping with condensation, is an icon of relief from the summer heat. It quenches the thirst and satisfies the desire for flavor like no other drink.
All you need to do is pull up a reclining chair, sit back, relax, and sip away.

Vitamin C Bomb Smoothie

Vitamin C Bomb Smoothie
Is it me or it looks like spring is finally in the air?
The temperatures are still pretty chilly but the forecast says it will start warming up soon and the days are getting longer and lighter, if you know what I mean.
Although the approaching change in season has us rejoicing for the sunshine, warm weather, and blooming flowers that it brings, it also has us bracing for allergies and seasonal colds to flare up.
No matter how much you love spring, colds and allergies are not fun.
Luckily, there are natural ways to fend them off.
Such as charging on Vitamin C, which is considered the "muscle" of the immune system.

Avocado Lime and Basil Smoothie

Avocado Lime and Basil Smoothie

Guys, I think I’m onto something.
Like I know that if you glance at this recipe's ingredient list, it looks like a weird combination of ingredients for a smoothie: Basil? Lime? Avocado?
Wait, what?
But believe me when I say that this is the REAL DEAL.
It’s so smooth, bright, cheery, and refreshing: the perfect antidote to the heat wave we're all experiencing right now.
[On a side note can I just say that I’m so done with this summer. Seriously I’m done. Fall can’t come soon enough. I want to pull out the sweaters, scarves, warm coats, and the fresh smell of hot coffee. Summer begone.]

Superfood Goji Berry Smoothie

Good news people: this smoothie is awesome!
And that’s a fact, whether you like it or not.
It’s ridiculously healthy and tastes delicious. Like there’s no need to talk about it because it’s a total no-brainer.
It fills your belly and helps keep you full. It’s a perfect on-the-go breakfast, snack or even a meal for lunch. Actually, this smoothie is so perfect the time of the day truly doesn’t matter.

Raspberry Mint Iced Tea

Raspberry Mint Iced Tea

Okay! Let’s be real for a minute. I'm melting right now.
I know some like it hot but heat waves really makes me ornery.
Yes, I’ve said it: O-R-N-E-R-Y.
It’s almost 100° outside but feels like it’s 200°. They don’t call it a cruel, cruel summer for nothing.
And there’s nothing we can do about it, except giving in to the fact it’s sweltering hot by finding something super cool to do.

Blueberry Lemonade

July 13, 2016

Blueberry Lemonade

Judging from the last couple of recipes I’ve posted on this blog, you might assume that I’m currently subsiding on a liquid diet. I’m not.
I’m still eating solid food too, I promise.
Fact is, when the heat weighs me down I’d rather sip than munch food. So smoothies, juices, iced tea, and — needless to say it — lemonade.

Limonada De Coco (Frozen Coconut Limeade)

Limonada de Coco (Frozen Coconut Limeade)

Summer is in full swing and the weather is heating up all around.
For those of you who are already on vacation, good for you, I envy you so much. Because let’s face it, the city is a terrible place to be in the summer.
The hot exhale of garbage trucks, questionable drips from a/c units above your head, mounting piles of garbage simmering in the heat, crowded and smelly subway cars. Should I go on?
And though it’s true that there are a million things to do to make summer more liveable in the summer (free public pools, sprinkles parks, etc.), from July 4th on everyone that has the means to be elsewhere is, while the rest of us is slowly melting on the pavement.

Antioxidant Berry Chia Seed Smoothie

Antioxidant Berry Chia Seed Smoothie

I can see you rolling your eyes. (That's right, I can see you even from here, because I have a super powers!) You're thinking: What? NOT another smoothie! Is he on one of his smoothie marathons or something?
Well, don’t worry. The next recipe will be a NON-smoothie I promise. I just couldn’t resist sharing with you guys what I had for breakfast for the last month, and probably what I’m going to have for lunch for the next two months.
And isn’t it the point of a personal food blog to show you guys the food I’m actually making (and eating)?

Pineapple Coconut Smoothie

Pineapple Coconut Smoothie

It’s been a long while since I have posted a smoothie recipe here.
Too long, five months to be precise.
And I don’t want you to get the impression that I don’t care for smoothies anymore.
I still love smoothies and I make one nearly every day, even in this freezing cold February.
February, a month that I find rather difficult to fully embrace.
I don’t know if it’s because it has an inconsistent number of days. Normally, there are 28 days (already annoying), but then there's the leap year rule where an extra day is added every four years, so 29. Confusing.
February is also the last full month of winter, but it can be just as cold as January. Maybe even more so.
It teases us with warm days here and there and a little hope enters our hearts, but cold spells are still in the forecast. And when it does, it stings a little harder.

(Paleo) Rich ‘n Creamy Hot Chocolate

August 31, 2015

(Paleo) Rich and Creamy Hot Chocolate

Is it too early for hot chocolate?
The answer is who cares, hot chocolate is forever.
OK, OK, OK...I know it's still summer. Hot, humid, sweaty, smelly, glorious summer — with temperatures sitting firmly planted near the triple digits.
But I woke up last Saturday morning and needed hot chocolate.
If I crave something, I make it, and eat it (or drink it in this case). It.Just.Has.To.Happen.

Raspberry Cocoa Smoothie

Raspberry Cocoa Smoothie

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that people have strong opinions about the combination of fruit and chocolate.
I don’t judge, I mean, I have strong opinions about pretty much everything, such as the combination of chocolate and cayenne pepper (sometimes), whitefish salad sandwich (no thanks), pillow fight in Union Square (once is more than enough), and how many rounds of Candy Crush it is acceptable to play back-to-back (non-stop, what kind of question is that?)
What I’m saying here, is that pretty much the only thing I don’t have uncompromising views on is the combo of fruit and chocolate.

Rosemary-Peach Iced Tea

July 22, 2015

Rosemary-Peach Iced Tea

I’m going to state the obvious: there is nothing more refreshing than a tall glass of iced tea on a hot summer day.
I know it, you know it, even my 6-year old niece knows it.
Iced tea quenches your thirst and satisfies your desire for flavor. It’s one of those delicious flavors that just makes the summertime seem worth while. That and BBQs, doing things outdoors, Central Park Summer Stage, MoMA PS1, Water Fight NYC, and long walks on the beach. Just to name a few.

Caffe' Shakerato

July 6, 2015

Caffe' Shakerato
First things first, let’s do the pronunciation thing.
Caffe’ shakerato is pronounced as you might expect, sort of “shake-er-AH-toe”.
I know it sounds funny but that’s the way it is.
